Ferrari could soon face internal tension unless clear rules are set to manage on-track battles between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in Formula 1. Veteran commentator Timo Glock has expressed concern over the increasingly close and aggressive duels between the two Ferrari drivers, particularly at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, warning that without proper guidance, a serious collision could occur. Glock believes that the team must intervene before competition between their stars escalates into a “disaster” that could jeopardize both cars’ results.
Ferrari’s competitive form and Hamilton’s resurgence
The Scuderia Ferrari team is enjoying a renaissance with the SF-26, a car capable of challenging for wins and podiums. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have already claimed three podium finishes in the first three races of the season, highlighting the excellent work done by Ferrari engineers in Maranello. The team is now focused on upgrades to close the performance gap to Mercedes before the Miami Grand Prix.
The SF-26’s strong design allows both drivers to race hard while remaining competitive. In Shanghai, Lewis Hamilton managed to edge out Charles Leclerc, while in Suzuka it was the Monegasque who had the upper hand. Despite the intensity of these on-track battles, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur maintains that the only non-negotiable rule is for both drivers to finish the race, emphasizing trust in their professionalism and mutual respect.
Timo Glock warns of inevitable collision
However, Timo Glock disagrees with a hands-off approach, stressing that the team must establish stricter guidelines before a serious incident occurs. He explained to Sky that clear boundaries must be drawn whenever the drivers’ actions threaten Ferrari’s overall race strategy. Glock noted that if the teammates impede each other, overuse their battery power, or compromise positions due to close racing, team management must intervene immediately to prevent damage.
The former F1 driver specifically mentioned the Suzuka battle as a warning sign. While the unofficial rule has allowed Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to race each other freely, Glock believes the risk of a collision is growing. He stated that both drivers are pushing hard to maximize their results, but sooner or later, the competitive edge might lead one of them into the gravel or off the track entirely.
Balancing competition and team priorities
Ferrari now faces the delicate challenge of balancing the aggressive ambitions of two world-class drivers with the team’s broader championship objectives. While Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are both capable of winning races and securing podiums, unchecked duels could threaten Ferrari’s standing in the constructors’ championship. Glock’s warning serves as a reminder that clear team orders or guidelines might be essential to maintain harmony and prevent avoidable incidents in the coming races.
Ferrari’s ability to manage internal competition while maintaining its competitive form will be crucial. With upgrades on the horizon and both drivers hungry for victory, the coming races may test the team’s discipline, strategy, and conflict management like never before.
