Following a disappointing fourth-place finish in qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc expressed his intense frustration with a physical gesture that spoke volumes, occurring just as Ferrari decided to cut his radio feed. Throughout the Monaco GP weekend, expectations for Ferrari remained high, with many believing the SF-26 had the pace to secure pole position. However, two critical mistakes proved fatal for Leclerc’s chances, leading to a furious outburst and pointed comments over the team radio.
The threat from Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen was already evident as early as FP3. It appears Ferrari struggled to optimize their package, with the 28-year-old continuing to battle braking system issues that prevented him from finding the necessary feel for the car. While both Mercedes and Red Bull arrived with machinery capable of fighting for the top spot in Monte Carlo, the Monegasque driver’s double error ultimately sealed his fate on the second row of the grid.
Leclerc throws gloves in a fit of rage after qualifying
Charles Leclerc was a notable absentee from the timing screens during the initial Q3 runs. He nearly lost control of the car at Massenet and was forced to abort the lap to recover. In the heat of the moment, Charles asked his race engineer, Bryan Bozzi, if he could immediately pivot into another push lap: “Fuck. I made a mistake. Can I not go to the next lap?” The answer was a firm no. From that point on, the challenge of putting together two consecutive flying laps in such a short window became nearly impossible. Despite the pressure, his subsequent attempt was exceptional, initially putting him 24 milliseconds clear of Antonelli.
However, his rivals continued to find more time. Charles Leclerc’s opening sector was incredibly strong, and he looked on track for pole until a decisive mistake at the Tabaccaio, where he clipped the barrier and damaged his right-rear suspension. His immediate reaction over the radio was one of pure heartbreak: “That was supposed to be the lap, but no…. Holy fuck….” At that point, Ferrari opted to silence the radio transmission. Before climbing out of the cockpit, Leclerc threw his gloves in a clear sign of irritation. Looking ahead to Sunday, overtaking remains notoriously difficult in the Principality, meaning his chances of a home victory have likely slipped away.
Charles Leclerc’s visible fury and the subsequent silencing of his team radio highlight the immense pressure of performing at his home race in Monte Carlo. By committing two uncharacteristic errors during the most critical moments of Q3, the Ferrari driver saw a golden opportunity for pole position transform into a challenging P4 start. With Mercedes and Red Bull showing superior execution when it mattered most, Leclerc now faces a nearly impossible task to climb the podium steps on Sunday. This qualifying session highlights the small margins in Monaco, where a single contact with the barriers can define an entire weekend’s outcome.
