Charles Leclerc unable to hide disappointment during Lewis Hamilton’s Barcelona celebrations. Charles Leclerc appeared overwhelmed as Lewis Hamilton stole the spotlight in Barcelona.

The aftermath of the Spanish Grand Prix highlighted a striking shift within Ferrari. While Lewis Hamilton celebrated a landmark victory in Barcelona and confirmed the growing potential of the SF-26, Charles Leclerc was left reflecting on one of his most challenging weekends of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Coming into the Barcelona round, Charles Leclerc was determined to respond after a frustrating Monaco Grand Prix and re-establish himself as Ferrari’s leading title contender. Instead, the weekend unfolded in the opposite direction. A costly crash during the final phase of qualifying left the Monegasque driver starting only tenth on the grid, immediately placing him on the back foot for Sunday’s race.

At the other side of the Ferrari garage, Lewis Hamilton extracted the maximum from the upgraded package introduced by the Scuderia. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion secured a front-row starting position before converting Ferrari’s improved pace into a memorable victory, his first Grand Prix win in red.

The contrast between the two Ferrari drivers could hardly have been greater. While Lewis Hamilton stood atop the podium celebrating a breakthrough moment in his Ferrari journey, Charles Leclerc’s race ended prematurely after technical issues forced him into retirement during the closing stages.

The result has significant implications for the championship battle. The Briton’s victory strengthened his position within the title race and increased his advantage over Charles Leclerc in the drivers’ standings to 40 points. With the season entering a crucial phase and several key races approaching, attention is already turning to whether Charles Leclerc can mount a strong response at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Barcelona weekend exposes growing pressure on Charles Leclerc

According to reports from the Italian media following the race weekend, Charles Leclerc appeared unusually affected by the disappointing outcome during his post-race media commitments.

Observers suggested that the Ferrari driver displayed a level of emotional vulnerability rarely associated with modern Formula 1 drivers. Rather than looking for explanations or external factors to justify the result, Charles Leclerc reportedly accepted responsibility for the difficult weekend and appeared deeply frustrated by his inability to contribute to Ferrari’s success.

The situation was made even more noticeable by the fact that Ferrari’s latest upgrades appeared to perform exactly as intended. Barcelona had been viewed as a critical test for the Scuderia’s development programme, and Lewis Hamilton’s dominant performance provided strong evidence that the new components delivered a meaningful step forward in competitiveness.

For the Monegasque, however, the same package failed to produce the desired outcome. Mistakes, misfortune and ultimately retirement combined to create a weekend that highlighted how quickly momentum can swing in Formula 1.

Only a few races ago, many viewed Charles Leclerc as Ferrari’s primary championship hope. Following Barcelona, the internal dynamic appears far more balanced, with Lewis Hamilton emerging as the driver carrying the strongest momentum within the team.

Charles Leclerc credits Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari for Barcelona triumph

Despite his personal disappointment, Charles Leclerc was quick to acknowledge the outstanding work carried out by both Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari throughout the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.

Reflecting on the race, Charles Leclerc indicated that he did not believe he deserved any significant recognition for the victory and felt the success belonged entirely to Lewis Hamilton and the team. The Ferrari driver suggested that he would have preferred to be competing closer to the front and playing a more meaningful role in the battle for victory, but admitted that his own mistakes had prevented that from happening.

Charles Leclerc also praised Lewis Hamilton’s recent form, noting that the British driver had been operating at an exceptionally high level for several races and fully deserved the breakthrough result. He further highlighted the tremendous effort Ferrari had invested in developing the SF-26, stressing that the benefits of the team’s aggressive upgrade programme were now becoming increasingly visible on track.

While encouraged by the progress Ferrari has made in closing the gap to its rivals, the 28-year-old made it clear that his personal frustration remained considerable. Seeing the car capable of winning races only amplified his disappointment, as he felt unable to maximize the opportunity available to him in Barcelona.

With Ferrari’s upgraded package now validated by a Grand Prix victory, expectations will inevitably rise for both drivers. The Austrian Grand Prix therefore shapes up as a potentially decisive weekend, not only for Ferrari’s championship ambitions but also for Charles Leclerc’s efforts to reassert himself alongside an increasingly confident Lewis Hamilton.

As the Formula 1 season moves into its next phase, Ferrari appears to possess a genuine race-winning car. The challenge for Charles Leclerc will be ensuring that Barcelona becomes a temporary setback rather than the moment when the balance of power inside the Scuderia permanently shifted in Lewis Hamilton’s favour.
