In an interview with monthly motor racing magazine ‘Motor Sport’, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc reflects on his first year with the Maranello team and most importantly on the lessons learned after what at times seemed to be a difficult partnership with teammate Sebastian Vettel.
Charles Leclerc admitted that in the beginning, it was quite difficult for him to accept radio instructions from the team: “Especially if you come from the junior categories. There you will never be asked to do something for your teammate. There is only you and that’s it.” – the Monegasque driver explained, as reported by ‘Motor Sport’ magazine – “But in the end, it is pretty clear that Formula 1 is about teamwork. When there is more competition between two drivers, things get a little tricky. But in the end it’s not as bad as it looks from the outside. Sebastian and I have a good relationship.” – he added.
At the same time, the Monegasque driver thinks that Team Principal Mattia Binotto is handling the situation well: “Mattia has the right balance to be a team boss. He knows how strict he has to be in difficult moments. As soon as you fight another strong team, you need both cars that can help each other. On the other hand, there are certain situations where the driver has to be a bit selfish. You have to find the right balance.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded.
