Charles Leclerc may already be one of the most recognizable figures in modern Formula 1, but the Ferrari driver believes his story is far from complete. Despite becoming a multiple Grand Prix winner, securing memorable victories for the Scuderia and recently committing his future to Maranello with a long-term contract extension, the Monegasque still feels there are significant gaps in his list of achievements.
The timing of those comments is particularly interesting. Ahead of his home race in Monaco, Ferrari confirmed that Charles Leclerc will remain at the team for the foreseeable future, reinforcing the belief that both sides are fully invested in chasing Formula 1’s biggest prize together. However, loyalty alone will not satisfy a driver whose ambitions have always stretched far beyond race wins.
For Charles Leclerc, the ultimate objective remains unchanged: becoming the driver who finally ends Ferrari’s long wait for a Drivers’ World Championship. The Scuderia has not celebrated a title-winning driver since Kimi Raikkonen secured the crown in 2007, and the pressure to end that drought continues to grow with every passing season.
Why Charles Leclerc still feels his Formula 1 story is incomplete
Reflecting on his career during an interview ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, Charles Leclerc was asked to assess what he has accomplished so far and whether there were milestones he still felt were missing from his Formula 1 résumé.
The Ferrari star reportedly admitted that while he is grateful for everything he has achieved, he cannot ignore the fact that his victory tally and championship record remain below the standards he has set for himself. According to the Monegasque, race wins and a world title remain the two biggest targets that continue to drive him forward.
He suggested that every top-level athlete is naturally motivated by what they have yet to achieve rather than what they have already accomplished. While racing for Ferrari was always a dream, Charles Leclerc indicated that fulfilling that dream does not remove the desire to add far more success to his record.
The Monegasque also highlighted the importance of loyalty in his decision to remain with Ferrari. Charles Leclerc reportedly emphasized that the Italian team believed in him during a critical stage of his career and played a major role in helping him reach Formula 1. That trust remains something he values deeply today.
Even so, gratitude does not diminish ambition. Charles Leclerc acknowledged that victories and world championships are ultimately the statistics by which elite Formula 1 drivers are judged, and those are the achievements he is still determined to secure in the coming years.
Ferrari’s challenge and the championship dream
The new Ferrari contract extension sends a clear message about Charles Leclerc’s mindset. Rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere, the 28-year-old has doubled down on his belief that the Scuderia can eventually return to the top of Formula 1.
That faith has been tested at times. Ferrari has produced race-winning cars during Charles Leclerc’s tenure, but sustained championship-winning consistency has often proved elusive. Strong starts have sometimes been followed by development setbacks, strategic mistakes or reliability concerns, preventing the team from mounting a complete title challenge.
Nevertheless, Charles Leclerc continues to believe that success with Ferrari would carry a unique significance. Winning a championship with the sport’s most iconic team would place him alongside some of the greatest names in Formula 1 history and cement his place among Ferrari legends.
His last victories came during Ferrari’s encouraging 2024 campaign, when Charles Leclerc claimed three wins, including emotional triumphs at Monaco and Monza. Those victories offered a reminder of both his talent and the enormous connection he shares with Ferrari supporters around the world.
What Charles Leclerc learned from Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz
Beyond discussing his own achievements, Charles Leclerc also reflected on the teammates who have shaped his development over the years. Throughout his Formula 1 career, he has consistently found himself alongside more experienced drivers, a situation he believes has benefited him enormously.
The Ferrari driver reportedly found it amusing that he has almost always been the younger member of the partnership, whether sharing the garage with Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz or now Lewis Hamilton. However, he acknowledged that time eventually changes every driver’s perspective.
The 28-year-old suggested that one day he will become the experienced veteran within a team, just as Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz were during different stages of his own career. Rather than seeing that prospect as a burden, he views it as an additional source of motivation.
According to the Monegasque, competing against proven winners and world champions has always pushed him to raise his level. Charles Leclerc reportedly credited Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz with helping him develop different aspects of his driving and approach to Formula 1, explaining that he learned valuable lessons from each of them.
At the same time, Charles Leclerc admitted that partnering a younger driver in the future could be an interesting experience. After spending years measuring himself against established stars, the Ferrari driver believes it would be fascinating to eventually become the benchmark that the next generation tries to challenge.
For now, though, his attention remains fixed on the same objective that has defined his Ferrari journey from the beginning. Charles Leclerc has secured his future with the Scuderia, but the achievements he craves most are still waiting. More victories and a long-awaited Formula 1 world championship remain at the top of his wish list, and he is betting that Ferrari will ultimately provide the opportunity to achieve both.
