Meta description: Charles Leclerc says Ferrari must understand why it was so unexpectedly fast at Silverstone after his British GP victory, insisting the team had not been sandbagging.
What a surprise at Silverstone
If someone had told Charles Leclerc after the Austrian Grand Prix, which he had ended in a disappointing eighth place, that seven days later at Silverstone he would be enjoying the Monegasque anthem from the top step of the podium after winning the British Grand Prix, the Ferrari driver would probably have had to pinch himself more than once.
It took a small dose of luck, which came in the form of the technical issue that ended Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s sensational charge, but after the disappointments of 2021 and, above all, 2022, Charles Leclerc was finally able to add Silverstone to his collection of Formula 1 victories.
The driver born in 1997 has now reached nine Formula 1 wins, and with a Ferrari like this in a season that looks set to remain uncertain and balanced, there is every chance Charles Leclerc will reach double figures. The dream of the World Championship is not over yet. Seventy-one points is a big gap, but the fight is still open.
Speaking to Sky, Charles Leclerc stressed that Ferrari must now understand why the team was so strong, far stronger than even the most optimistic predictions had suggested: “When we said on Thursday that we would struggle, we really believed it. We were not sandbagging, we were not hiding,” Charles Leclerc said. “All our numbers said it would be an extremely difficult weekend. We need to understand why we were much faster than we expected. Just as we analyse in detail why things go wrong when we struggle, this time we have to do the opposite.”
