Charles Leclerc has identified a key tactical opportunity for Ferrari in the 2026 Formula 1 season, suggesting that aggressive race starts could be the Scuderia’s most effective weapon in challenging Mercedes’ early dominance. While outright pace continues to favour the Silver Arrows, Charles Leclerc believes Ferrari can still apply pressure by exploiting one specific performance advantage.
So far in 2026, Mercedes has established itself as the benchmark team, consistently locking out front-row positions in qualifying sessions, including the Sprint format. However, despite their strong one-lap performance, both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have shown vulnerability off the line, struggling to convert pole positions into immediate race control during the opening phase.
This pattern has opened a window of opportunity for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have both demonstrated strong старт performances, with Charles Leclerc taking the lead at the start in Australia and Lewis Hamilton doing the same during both race starts in China. These moments briefly allowed Ferrari to challenge Mercedes before the superior race pace of the W17 enabled George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to recover and assert control.
Charles Leclerc has indicated that these early laps could prove decisive if Ferrari is to remain competitive over a full race distance. It was explained that by positioning themselves ahead of the Mercedes cars, Ferrari drivers could disrupt their rhythm by forcing them to operate in turbulent airflow, commonly referred to as “dirty air,” which reduces aerodynamic efficiency and tyre performance.
Start performance emerges as Ferrari’s key advantage
The importance of race starts was further highlighted at the Japanese Grand Prix. Following a safety car restart triggered by a major incident, Charles Leclerc successfully positioned himself ahead of George Russell in the battle for third place. Crucially, he was able to maintain that position, demonstrating that track position and clean execution can offset underlying pace deficits, at least temporarily.
Analysis of the opening rounds suggests that Ferrari’s launch performance off the grid is among the strongest on the grid. This capability has allowed both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to gain positions immediately after lights out, even against cars that are otherwise quicker over a race stint.
Charles Leclerc conveyed the view that Ferrari’s realistic opportunity to compete with Mercedes lies in maximizing these moments. It was suggested that maintaining track position during the initial laps could enable Ferrari to slow down the Mercedes drivers sufficiently to remain within strategic range.
Mercedes pace advantage remains significant
Despite these tactical opportunities, Charles Leclerc acknowledged that Mercedes continues to hold a clear advantage in overall performance. Once George Russell or Kimi Antonelli are able to run in clean air, their race pace has consistently allowed them to pull away from Ferrari.
It was indicated that even a small drop in performance can lead to substantial time loss under the current 2026 regulations, making it extremely difficult to recover once a faster car gains clear track ahead. Data from the opening races suggests that Mercedes retains a margin of several tenths per lap, a gap that becomes increasingly decisive over longer stints.
This performance difference explains why Ferrari’s early-race gains have not yet translated into victories. While Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton have been able to lead races briefly, maintaining that position over a full distance has proven far more challenging.
Ferrari focusing on development and consistency
Looking ahead, Charles Leclerc emphasized that Ferrari must remain focused on its own development programme rather than overextending in an attempt to immediately match Mercedes. It was suggested that pushing beyond the car’s limits could lead to inconsistencies and further performance losses.
Ferrari is understood to have several upgrades in development, aimed at reducing the performance gap to Mercedes as the season progresses. These improvements are expected to target both aerodynamic efficiency and power unit optimization, areas that have proven critical under the new regulations.
For Lewis Hamilton, the evolving competitive picture adds another layer of complexity. As he continues to adapt to Ferrari’s systems and car characteristics, maximizing opportunities in the early phases of races could be crucial in maintaining competitiveness against both Mercedes and his teammate Charles Leclerc.
Strategic execution could define Ferrari’s 2026 campaign
The opening phase of each race is increasingly emerging as a decisive battleground in Formula 1 2026. For the Maranello team, the ability of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to execute strong starts and control track position may represent the best short-term strategy to challenge Mercedes.
However, sustained success will ultimately depend on closing the underlying performance gap. Until then, Ferrari’s approach is likely to focus on precision, execution and maximizing every available opportunity to disrupt Mercedes’ rhythm and remain in contention.
