Charles Leclerc has revealed that Scuderia Ferrari will conduct a thorough review of its race strategy following a highly frustrating Las Vegas Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver, who started the race in ninth position, initially crossed the line in sixth after losing positions during the pit stop phase.
Charles Leclerc demonstrated strong pace in the opening laps, executing an impressive overtake on Oscar Piastri at Turn 14 on lap 12 to claim sixth place. He quickly advanced to fifth after passing Isack Hadjar, showcasing the Ferrari SF-25’s competitiveness despite its struggles on the straights.
However, the pit stop window proved costly. While other drivers pitted earlier, the Monegasque driver stayed out on track for several additional laps, leaving him vulnerable to being undercut by Oscar Piastri. Despite several attempts to reclaim the position on track, Charles Leclerc was unable to pass the McLaren driver, ultimately finishing sixth. Hours later, post-race penalties for both McLaren drivers promoted Charles Leclerc to fourth.
When asked about the race before the McLaren disqualifications were announced, Charles Leclerc admitted that the outcome was disappointing. He explained that, although overtaking on track was entertaining due to Ferrari’s straight-line struggles, the pit stop phase had cost them several positions. Charles Leclerc acknowledged the need to review the team’s decisions during this critical part of the race.
Ferrari to investigate Las Vegas pit stop strategy
Had Charles Leclerc emerged from the pit lane ahead of Oscar Piastri, it is highly likely he would have finished ahead of Kimi Antonelli, who managed an extraordinary long stint on aging tyres to reach the chequered flag. Antonelli originally crossed the line in fifth but was promoted to third after the double McLaren disqualification.
The unexpected loss of position to Oscar Piastri was surprising for Charles Leclerc, who confirmed that Ferrari will evaluate what went wrong during the pit stop sequence. He reflected that he believed Piastri had been behind him after the first stint and was caught off guard to see the McLaren driver ahead on track.
Charles Leclerc stated that the team will closely examine the strategy calls: the timing of the pit stops, tyre choices, and race management will all be scrutinized to avoid similar scenarios in future races. Despite the frustration, the 28-year-old maintained that the race offered valuable insights into overtaking under challenging conditions and highlighted areas where Ferrari can improve.
The review will focus on whether Charles Leclerc’s pit stop timing was slightly delayed and how Ferrari could have managed track position more effectively against Oscar Piastri. The Ferrari man emphasized that understanding this part of the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be key for improving the Maranello team’s race execution in the upcoming rounds.
