Charles Leclerc has responded to Lewis Hamilton’s frustration over their opening-lap clash at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, insisting that aggressive racing is inevitable when fighting for victory. The Ferrari driver also acknowledged that his five-second penalty was deserved after an incident that helped Max Verstappen take advantage of the team’s missed opportunity.
Ferrari’s Mexico GP victory hopes damaged by teammate battle
Ferrari had the race pace to secure a one-two finish in Mexico, but the internal battle between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc opened the door for Max Verstappen. The Dutchman needed no second invitation, making the most of the opportunities handed to him by the Ferrari drivers.
Charles Leclerc’s attack at Turn 4, which resulted in him cutting the track, and Lewis Hamilton’s slow exit from Turn 5 allowed Max Verstappen to capitalise. The Red Bull driver first overtook Lewis Hamilton on track before gaining another position against Charles Leclerc during the pit stops, when the Monegasque had to serve his five-second penalty for leaving the circuit.
The sanction was five seconds rather than ten because Lewis Hamilton had also gone wide during the incident. The circumstances behind that decision were subsequently addressed in the FIA’s explanation of Charles Leclerc’s Mexico GP penalty.
Charles Leclerc responds to Lewis Hamilton’s complaints
Speaking about the confrontation with his Ferrari teammate, Charles Leclerc made it clear that he also had reasons to be unhappy with how the opening-lap battle unfolded.
“I’ll talk about it with Lewis. Neither of us made the corner. I don’t know whether Hamilton’s intention was to make me drop back to third position, given that there was a Red Bull running second behind me. I preferred to hold my position and see what would happen. I could also be unhappy about how far he pushed me off the track at the exit of the first corner, but that’s part of racing. When you’re fighting for victory, that’s how it should be.”
The remarks underline the contrasting perspectives of the two Ferrari drivers following an incident that proved costly for the team. Their on-track rivalry had already raised questions about how Ferrari would manage its drivers, particularly after Lewis Hamilton’s approach to racing Charles Leclerc at the United States Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc admits penalty was deserved as Ferrari plans internal talks
Despite defending the intensity of the battle, Charles Leclerc did not dispute the punishment imposed by the stewards. He accepted responsibility for the infringement and confirmed that Ferrari would discuss the incident internally to prevent a repeat.
“I received a deserved penalty during the pit stop, and we’ll discuss this within the team to prevent similar situations from happening again in the future,” Charles Leclerc concluded.
The five-second delay during the pit-stop sequence proved particularly damaging because it allowed Max Verstappen to move ahead of Charles Leclerc. The impact of such decisions on Ferrari’s race operations can also be explored through the team’s pit-stop and strategy statistics.
What had initially appeared to be an opportunity for Ferrari to claim a one-two finish ultimately became a missed chance, with the opening-lap confrontation playing a decisive role in the outcome. The 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix race report provides the wider context of how the race unfolded for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
