Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc crossed the line just ahead of Sergio Perez and took second place on track in the 2022 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka circuit although he was in trouble after making a mistake at the final corner. Charles Leclerc went straight on over the chicane under pressure from the Red Bull, and then squeezed him a bit wide as they crossed the line.
“Tyres were all over the place,” sayed Charles Leclerc on team radio. The Ferrari driver was investigated for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. A few moments after the end of the Japanese Grand Prix, it was confirmed that Charles Leclerc was handed a five-second penalty for the incident with Sergio Perez on the final lap of the Suzuka race.
Sergio Perez was therefore promoted to second place, while Charles Leclerc finishes the Japanese Grand Prix on the final step of the podium.
Confusion abounded as to whether full points will be awarded or not for this race. If full points are awarded, that penalty for Charles Leclerc – which drops him to third place – means Verstappen is world champion.
Even the driver himself didn’t seem sure if his second world championship was now confirmed.
