The 2022 Formula 1 season will remain in Charles Leclerc’s memory as a special year. It is true that if we look at the final standings, the Monegasque driver finished the season 146 points behind world champion Max Verstappen, but for the first time since competing in Formula 1 he was able to take the platonic title of vice-champion. A clear step forward after the disappointing 2020 and 2021 seasons, when, despite always performing at a high level, Charles Leclerc was never in a position to compete for victory due to the uncompetitive Ferrari cars.
This year, however, the #16 Monegasque scored three race wins and celebrated 11 podium finishes. Statistics that could have been even a lot better without some issues such as car reliability and poor strategies from the Maranello pit wall.
However, Charles Leclerc has already demonstrated several times, during his still young career, that he knows how to take his own responsibilities, honestly pointing out his own mistakes above all rather than those of the team around him. Analyzing the championship that has just ended in a long interview with the British website The Race, the Ferrari man spoke of his evolution as a driver, explaining that he has learned to be more disciplined, especially with the management of his free time. “The discipline I’ve had this year has been much better than in previous years – acknowledged the 25-year-old from the Principality.
“When I mean discipline it’s not so much on track, but it’s mostly off track, coming back home and having the discipline of relaxing in between races, which was a thing that I never knew before this year. Basically, I was always moving right and left and I would be destroyed from the sixth race onwards during the season. And that wasn’t helping.” – the Monegasque driver explained.

“I do believe that fighting for wins and fighting back for podiums also helped me personally. I just feel more complete and every year you just learn from the previous experiences. I think this has always been a strength of mine. I’ve always been very honest with myself and tried to learn from my mistakes and try to strengthen my weaknesses. I think the first few years it was always very clear where I was. For next year, it’s all about working in the details and just trying to improve in every single area by a little. That will make a difference in the end. But I feel a much more complete driver than I was.” – Charles Leclerc concluded.
