Scuderia Ferrari driver and current Formula 1 championship leader Charles Leclerc has admonished himself for being “too greedy” in the Imola race which took place on Sunaday, after a late crash prevented him from scoring another podium finish this season. Charles Leclerc had secured third place and was pushing hard to catch the Red Bull Racing car of Sergio Perez following a late pitstop. Ferrari had called Charles in to mount the Soft tyres, while Red Bull responded the next lap. The Monegasque driver tried everything to recover the gap to Sergio Perez, but hit the Variante Alta kerb too hard and was sent into a spin, colliding with the barriers.
Despite the fact that Charles Leclerc could resume the race, he had to make an extra pit stop to change the front wing and eventually finished the 2022 Emilia Romagna GP in sixth place, limiting the damage. However, Charles is aware the final result is three places lower than he could have finished at Imola:
“I believe that the spin shouldn’t have happened today. I mean, P3 was the best I could do, we didn’t have the pace for much more and I was too greedy and I paid a price for it and lost seven potential points compared to my third place I was before. So it is a shame, it’s seven points that are valuable at the end of the championship for sure. This shouldn’t happen again.” – he explained at the end of the race.
Charles Leclerc, whose championship lead has been reduced to 27 points over reigning champion Max Verstappen, admitted that Ferrari’s direct rivals have now proved to be pointed out that Red Bull has now been quicker at Jeddah and Imola, which is a worrying situation for the Maranello team: “It is very, very close and I think it would be that way for the rest of the season and that is why every small mistake [counts]. This is a big mistake. But actually the consequence considering the mistake could have been much bigger. It’s only seven points today but it could cost more the next time so I need to be careful of that.” -the Monegasque driver concluded, after a disappointing weekend for Scuderia Ferrari in front if its own fans.
