Charles Leclerc’s frustration boiled over during the 2026 Miami Grand Prix as a crucial pit stop decision from Ferrari left him stuck in traffic and behind George Russell, costing him valuable track position in a tightly contested race.
Leclerc questions Ferrari strategy over team radio
As the race unfolded and conditions remained uncertain with no immediate sign of rain, Ferrari opted to react to George Russell’s stop by bringing Leclerc in on lap 22 of 57. However, the timing and execution of the call quickly came under scrutiny from the Ferrari driver himself.
Over team radio, Leclerc questioned the decision-making process:
“Why did we stop?”
“When is the rain?”
The responses from the pit wall were not immediate, adding to the uncertainty inside the cockpit at a critical stage of the race.
Charles Leclerc also made his frustration clear regarding communication and strategy execution:
“Next time you make a decision please speak with me on here as well.”
Slow stop proves costly for Ferrari
What made the situation worse for Ferrari was the execution of the pit stop itself. A 3.7-second stationary time meant the 28-year-old lost additional ground in the pit cycle, dropping him behind George Russell after rejoining the track.
Before the stop, Charles Leclerc had already been battling in traffic alongside the Mercedes driver, but the delayed and slightly inefficient pit stop effectively shifted the balance in Russell’s favour.
With no rain arriving at that stage of the race, Ferrari’s strategic gamble appeared increasingly questionable, especially as track position proved crucial on a circuit where overtaking remained difficult.
The Monegasque rejoined the race still in contention but now forced to recover lost ground, adding further pressure to a race that was already developing into a strategic battle as much as a performance fight on track.
