Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has provided details about the reason which led to Scuderia Ferrari lack of track action in the second free practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix earlier today.
The first day of running at the Suzuka circuit was held in difficult conditions due to the heavy rain, with drivers switching from the extreme wets to intermediates in both FP1 and FP2. The first free practice session seemed to go better for the Maranello team, as Charles Leclerc and his team-mate Carlos Sainz ended second and third quickest. But FP2 looked more difficult for the Italian side, with Charles Leclerc outside the top ten and with limited running at Suzuka.
The Monegasque driver, who was 2.1secs slower in the later run, explained:
“FP1 was fun [but] in FP2, we had no tyres left so it was less fun. But overall it was quite a good day. The feeling with the car is good. We just need to put everything together.” – he added.
Every driver starts a race weekend with four sets of intermediate tyres and three sets of the extreme-wet Pirelli compound. However, if teams face wet conditions during the free practice sessions, each driver has the possibility of using an extra set of intermediates, but these must be returned at the end of the session.
While Saturday’s qualifying session will most likely take place in dry conditions, more rain is forecast for the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, but the Ferrari driver is confident the F1-75 will prove to be in a strong position to challenge its opponents even in these conditions.

“It feels pretty good. As I said, I think FP2 was very difficult because the tyres were just completely done but there is plenty to learn for the race especially. It’s a positive Friday and let’s see tomorrow, because conditions will change a lot, so FP3 will be all about adapting to those conditions as quickly as possible and let’s see what is possible.” – Charles Leclerc concluded.
