Impeding Norris: what a mistake from the Ferrari pit wall
Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc is currently with the Race Stewards in Monaco for impeding Lando Norris in the final moments of Q3. The McLaren driver had to visibly slow down under the tunnel because he found Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari right in his trajectory. As a result, Lando Norris couldn’t complete his final attempt and will start from the tenth position on the fifth row in tomorrow’s Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo.
Charles Leclerc finished in third position, 22 milliseconds behind Fernando Alonso and 106 milliseconds behind Max Verstappen, who took pole position thanks to an impressive final sector on his last attempt. However, what is currently a second row will most likely be transformed into a third row for the Ferrari driver due to the impeding, as was clear from the footage. Lando Norris himself pointed out the incident and was surprised that Charles Leclerc didn’t notice his arrival. Usually, in such situations, a three-place grid penalty is imposed, which would demote the Ferrari man to sixth place.
Listening to the radio communication between Charles Leclerc’s race engineer, Xavi Marcos, and the Monegasque driver, it can be noticed that Marcos was busy giving Charles Leclerc the standings when he suddenly said, “Oh, we have traffic, Norris is coming,” when Charles Leclerc no longer had enough time to move to the right or accelerate sufficiently to not hinder the McLaren driver.
As the Monegasque exited the tunnel, he put his hands together under the steering wheel, expressing a gesture of dismay for what happened, and then moved on the left before Tabac Corner to let Max Verstappen pass without impeding the lap that ultimately gave the Red Bull driver the pole position.
