Ferrari Secures Fred Vasseur’s Future, Bringing Stability to the Team
Ferrari finally put an end to months of speculation regarding the future of team principal Fred Vasseur by extending his contract, quelling rumors that the Frenchman could be dismissed earlier in the 2025 season. The 57-year-old had faced increasing scrutiny after Ferrari abandoned early hopes of a championship run, and with his contract initially set to expire at the end of the season, uncertainty surrounded his leadership role.
Fred Vasseur, now entering his third year as Ferrari’s team principal, had been under pressure as the Scuderia struggled to meet the high expectations set at the start of 2025. After narrowly missing out on the 2024 Constructors’ Championship by 14 points to McLaren, Ferrari had envisioned a return to title contention, only to find themselves lagging significantly in both driver and team standings. McLaren currently dominates the Constructors’ Championship, leading Ferrari by 299 points after 14 rounds. Ferrari’s lead drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, are 133 and 175 points behind the drivers’ championship leader, Oscar Piastri, respectively.
Leclerc Welcomes Vasseur’s Contract Extension, Citing ‘Serenity’
Earlier this summer, reports suggested that Fred Vasseur had a very limited window to secure his position at Ferrari, with speculation claiming he had only three races to prove his worth. Despite the pressure, the French manager successfully negotiated a new two-year contract at the end of July, with an option for Ferrari to retain him through 2028. The news was met with approval from both of Ferrari’s drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who publicly supported the team principal’s continuation.
Charles Leclerc indicated that Fred Vasseur’s contract extension has created a calmer atmosphere within the team. He explained that while F1 teams strive to remain unaffected by external rumors, such speculation inevitably influences internal morale. Charles Leclerc highlighted that the confirmed stability at the leadership level has positively impacted the team’s environment, providing reassurance and a renewed sense of focus as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
Strategic Importance of Stability Ahead of 2026 Regulations
Ferrari officially announced Fred Vasseur’s new contract just before the Hungarian Grand Prix, marking the final race prior to F1’s summer break. While the mandated shutdown limited immediate benefits from the renewed leadership stability, Leclerc remains hopeful that the team will harness this “serenity” to maximize performance moving forward. The Scuderia has now shifted much of its focus toward developing their car for the 2026 Formula 1 regulation changes, with no major updates planned for the 2025 SF-25 following the rear suspension upgrade introduced at Spa.
Technical director Loic Serra has been closely involved with the SF-25 to oversee improvements, particularly the rear suspension update that addressed ongoing performance issues. Ferrari’s struggles with the SF-25 were evident early in the season, with a notable incident at the Chinese Grand Prix where Hamilton faced disqualification due to excessive floor wear from running the car too low. The team’s efforts to rectify these problems culminated in the upgrade implemented at the Belgian Grand Prix, 11 rounds after initial recognition of the Shanghai-related issues.
As Ferrari looks to stabilize its operations and regain competitive momentum, Fred Vasseur’s renewed contract is viewed as a crucial step in providing leadership continuity. The Scuderia now hopes that the improved internal atmosphere, combined with strategic technical planning, will allow them to enter the 2026 season stronger and more focused, minimizing setbacks and maximizing their chances of challenging for both drivers’ and constructors’ titles.
