More than three years after the devastating floods that struck Emilia-Romagna and forced the cancellation of the 2023 Imola Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc’s connection with the region continues to produce tangible results. The Ferrari driver returned to Imola to personally inaugurate a new multi-purpose community centre in Spazzate Sassatelli, built in part thanks to his substantial donation.
The ceremony also produced an intriguing Formula 1 moment. As Charles Leclerc said goodbye to those attending, he added: “I hope to see you again at the end of the year.” With Imola increasingly being discussed as a potential venue for the final round of the 2026 season, the Ferrari driver’s choice of words inevitably attracted attention, although there has been no official confirmation of a Formula 1 return.
Charles Leclerc returns to Imola three years after flood-relief campaign
The new community centre was inaugurated during the afternoon at Via Cardinala 22, on the site previously occupied by the hamlet’s old school buildings. It is one of the projects created from the fundraising initiative launched by Charles Leclerc immediately after the catastrophic floods of May 2023.
At the time, the Monegasque driver decided to auction several important pieces of his Formula 1 memorabilia, including a race suit, helmet and gloves, with the proceeds going towards helping people affected by the emergency. More than three years later, that gesture continues to deliver concrete benefits for the local community.
The new civic centre has a total value of almost €530,000 and was financed largely through the Ferrari driver’s donation. It is not the first project made possible by Charles Leclerc’s contribution either.
In recent months, a new outpatient medical facility between Via Cardinala and Via Benelli has already been inaugurated, while a children’s play area close to the Santerno river and the Imola circuit has also been redeveloped. The new community centre therefore represents the third tangible result of the charitable initiative.
Imola community welcomes Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc arrived in Spazzate Sassatelli at around 18:00, where he was welcomed by the City of Imola’s musical band, which performed both the Italian and Monegasque national anthems.
The ceremony was also attended by Emilia-Romagna regional president Michele de Pascale, Imola mayor Marco Panieri, Bishop Giovanni Mosciatti and numerous local residents.
Following the blessing of the new premises and speeches from local officials, Charles Leclerc took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony before touring the facility. It gave the Ferrari driver an opportunity to meet members of the community he had chosen to support during one of the most difficult periods in the region’s recent history.
The new building covers approximately 128 square metres and has been constructed as a nearly zero-energy building. It contains a multi-purpose hall intended for meetings and public activities, a second room, service areas and technical spaces.
The facility has been designed to become a genuine focal point for Spazzate Sassatelli, restoring a communal meeting place to residents following the damage caused by the floods.
Local officials thank Charles Leclerc for lasting contribution
Emilia-Romagna regional president Michele de Pascale offered a particularly significant message of thanks to Charles Leclerc, highlighting how the solidarity demonstrated during the emergency has now been transformed into something concrete and lasting for the community.
Imola mayor Marco Panieri expressed a similar sentiment, recalling how Charles Leclerc had personally chosen to support the region by turning some of the symbols of his Formula 1 career into practical assistance for those affected.
The new civic centre consequently becomes the third concrete result of that charitable effort, following the projects dedicated to healthcare and the local green area.
Charles Leclerc’s Imola comment fuels 2026 F1 finale speculation
It was towards the end of Charles Leclerc’s appearance, however, that the Ferrari driver delivered a comment that immediately caught attention. While saying goodbye to those present, he added: “I hope to see you again at the end of the year.”
The remark inevitably adds to speculation surrounding a possible Formula 1 return to Imola before the end of 2026. With the future of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix still under consideration, the possibility of the World Championship concluding alongside the Santerno river is becoming increasingly concrete.
There is no official confirmation at this stage. Nevertheless, the fact that those words were spoken in Imola by a Ferrari driver gives them particular significance as discussions continue over where the final race of the season could be held.
For fans looking at what such a return would mean historically, previous winners, poles and other venue benchmarks can be explored through the F1 Circuit Records & Statistics section.
Whatever happens with the Formula 1 calendar, Charles Leclerc’s latest visit already carried significance well beyond racing. What began with the auction of his Formula 1 equipment following the devastating May 2023 floods has now helped deliver three projects for the Imola community, with the new €530,000 civic centre providing the latest lasting result.
