Charles Leclerc believes Lewis Hamilton’s status as a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion should not be overlooked when assessing their increasingly close Ferrari battle in 2026. The two teammates have been separated by very little in qualifying this season, while Hamilton currently holds a 23-point advantage over Leclerc in the championship.
The comparison has become particularly significant because one-lap performance has traditionally been one of Leclerc’s strongest qualities. However, the Monegasque has found it more difficult to establish the same clear advantage with the current generation of cars, while Hamilton has repeatedly been able to match his teammate’s qualifying level. Their season-long numbers can be followed through the Charles Leclerc vs Lewis Hamilton head-to-head statistics.
Lewis Hamilton has strengthened his Ferrari form in 2026
Hamilton’s second season with Ferrari has represented a significant improvement from the difficulties he experienced during his first year in Maranello. The British driver has adapted more effectively to the team and has developed a stronger understanding of the cars introduced under the new regulations.
That progress has helped make the internal Ferrari contest considerably tighter. Leclerc has historically been able to create a particularly strong advantage on Saturdays, but the characteristics of the new cars have made it more difficult for him to exploit his ability to approach the limit in the same way.
The closeness between the two drivers has also extended beyond qualifying. Both have already won a Grand Prix in 2026, with Hamilton taking victory in Barcelona before Leclerc responded with success at Silverstone. Their respective victories and how they compared with Ferrari’s rivals are examined further in our analysis of Ferrari’s 2026 wins.
Charles Leclerc welcomes the challenge from Lewis Hamilton
Speaking during the Singapore Grand Prix media day, Leclerc was asked specifically about the qualifying comparison between the two Ferrari drivers. Rather than treating Hamilton’s ability to stay close as a negative reflection on his own performance, he stressed the level of the teammate he is facing.
Leclerc emphasised that Hamilton’s seven World Championships were an important part of the context, describing the Briton as a driver with enormous natural ability who is performing at an exceptionally high level this season.
The Ferrari driver also acknowledged that there are areas of his own performance that he can still improve. At the same time, he underlined the exceptional talent Hamilton brings to the team and regarded the seven-time champion’s strong campaign as motivation to continue extracting more from himself.
For Leclerc, that pressure is therefore not simply about defending his position within Ferrari. Having a teammate performing at such a high level gives him an additional benchmark, and he believes that challenge is helping push him towards his best.
With Hamilton holding the championship advantage and the qualifying margins remaining narrow, the Ferrari teammate comparison has become one of the defining elements of both drivers’ 2026 seasons.
