Imola, all heart
Starting from eleventh on the grid at a track like Imola, where overtaking is extremely difficult, Charles Leclerc knew he was in for a very tough race.
The Monegasque put together a race full of heart, climbing up to sixth place at the finish line with a bold pit strategy that could have brought him at least as high as fourth. However, the timing of the Virtual Safety Car and Safety Car worked against him, and then came the duel with Alex Albon. The team asked him to let the Williams through to avoid a possible penalty that might have pushed him even further back.
Charles Leclerc’s analysis
Charles Leclerc explained to Canal Plus: “It’s frustrating because we were having a good race, but both Safety Cars came at the worst possible time. I couldn’t pit because Lewis decided to come in at the last second, so I preferred not to take the risk. But that’s how things go, it’s disappointing.”
On the duel with Alex Albon: “I didn’t think there would be an issue. The rules are written a certain way, and we use them to the limit. We’ve seen that kind of situation many times before without any penalties.”
Final remark on Monaco: “Am I optimistic after this weekend? No.”
