Charles Leclerc’s big race
Charles Leclerc, on his fifth attempt, made it to the podium for the first time in 2025. The Ferrari driver managed to significantly extend his stint on medium tyres while keeping stunning lap times, and with hard tyres nine laps fresher than George Russell’s, he finally got the better of the Mercedes driver with a decisive overtake at Turn 1.
Charles Leclerc then had to fend off Lando Norris, who was on medium tyres after starting on hards. The Ferrari driver is 52 points behind Oscar Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship, a considerable gap already, but not yet unbridgeable—provided the trend is reversed.
The Monegasque driver told Sky Sport he was positively surprised by today’s podium: “I thought I’d have to defend from those behind me, Antonelli above all. I’m very happy with my race, I gave it everything, we need to improve in qualifying. The team was perfect, both the pit wall and the mechanics in the pits, they’re doing some incredible pit stops. We’re missing a bit of performance, but there are many things this weekend to be happy about—it’s been a while since I felt this good in the car and I’ve understood how to unlock a lot of performance. I hope the updates arrive soon and improve the car, although I think it will be hard to close the gap before the Spanish GP. We’ll have to see what happens there with the new wings—we’ll see where we stand after that weekend.” – the Ferrari driver concluded at the end of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
