Everything ready for the ‘home’ race
As Monza prepares for the Italian Grand Prix, which kicks off today with two crucial free practice sessions, teams and drivers will explore the new track surface and curbs at the Temple of Speed following recent renovation work. Below are Charles Leclerc’s remarks ahead of this important event for Ferrari, which is bringing significant updates to the SF-24.
The new track surface
“Is Monza less charming without the bumps? We often say that it’s important for tracks to maintain their personality, but the goal of resurfacing was precisely to eliminate the rough patches. The track is flatter and has more grip. Tire management will be different compared to recent editions.” – the Monegasque driver pointed out during the press conference for the Italian Grand Prix on Thursday.
The flattened curbs
“In Monaco, we were great on the curbs, but there they are taken at low speed, here at high speed. So, if there were negative feedback, I wouldn’t have been disappointed. We’ll see how it goes starting tomorrow.” – he added.
Ferrari’s updates
“I don’t think Monza is the best track to see if we’ve improved or not; Baku and Singapore will be more representative. Here, the only corner that might give us some indication is Parabolica. We don’t expect our weaknesses to be too evident here at Monza, but we’ll see on other tracks.” – Charles Leclerc replied when asked about the updates which the technicians of the Maranello team plan to introduce for the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
A compact F1
“The gap between Red Bull and McLaren has narrowed, but the gap between us and those teams hasn’t yet, and we need to close it. I definitely like that the competition is getting closer because that’s when the driver can make the difference. For the spectators, a more unpredictable F1 is certainly more interesting.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
