Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto has recently confirmed reports that the Italian side will launch several components of its 2022 power unit in the second half of the 2021 Formula 1 season. With drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz already on their third engines for the year, it is very likely both of them will have to take grid penalties later in the season in order to make use of Ferrari’s upgraded engine, but this is a small price to pay in order to gain important data and impressions of the upgraded elements in view of 2022.
Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera claimed earlier this week that Scuderia Ferrari will use a completely revised power unit in the 2022 Formula One season, with parts of it to emerge in the final iteration of its 2021 engine. Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto also confirmed reports that the sweeping new chassis regulations for 2022 give teams substantially “less freedom” to innovate than in the past.
When asked about his first impressions and expectations for the Maranello team’s 2022 Formula 1 car, Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc said: “It is very hard to understand where we are at this moment, we only have our data, we don’t know where we are as compared to the others. I had the chance to try the [new] car in the simulator and it went well, the feeling was good. But there is still a lot of work to do.” – Charles Leclerc explained.
