There are still 12 races to go in the 2021 Formula 1 season, but Scuderia Ferrari is already focused entirely on the preparations for next year and rightly so. Formula 1 is introducing new aerodynamic regulations for 2022 with the target of reducing the “dirty air” produced by F1 cars. Working on such significant aerodynamic and mechanical changes, the simulator will have an extremely important role for the team to be able to understand the behavior of these new cars, which are undoubtedly completely different from current F1 cars.
And after several years of work, Scuderia Ferrari have recently finalized the construction of their new state-of-the-art simulator facility in Fiorano, which they will now use to help develop the 2022 project, as confirmed by Team Principal Mattia Binotto: “We have made a huge effort in this area over the last year. We were behind, compared to the competition and we believe we will have an advantage. We hope to be able to use it to full capacity by the end of the season.” – the Ferrari boss explained, as reported by the Italian media.
The major factors that Ferrari feels will determine the order on track next season are structural choices such as chassis, suspension, transmission and gearbox. It seems quite clear, therefore, how the mechanical aspect will be able to offer many more chances than the aerodynamic one, necessary to create a significant margin over the opponents. The Maranello team is convinced of this and is working hard on this plan with the clear goal of being fully prepared for the 2022 changes:
“There is less freedom than in the past, so we will see very similar cars in terms of shape, and within a couple of years I expect the teams to be a lot closer. Mechanics, suspension, weight, centre of gravity, cooling system, will all be more important elements to make a difference than today, as well as the power unit. The drivers will also be more decisive. During 2022, we will have to reflect with the FIA and the other teams to understand whether we have gone too far in this reduction of freedom or not, revising the regulations if necessary.” – the Ferrari boss added.
