Concerns are growing around Charles Leclerc’s long-term prospects at Ferrari, with former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher warning that the Monegasque star should avoid being “misled” by the team’s current direction. According to Michael Schumacher’s brother, Charles Leclerc would be wise to prepare a clear “plan B” as Ferrari’s disappointing 2025 campaign continues to raise questions inside the Scuderia.
Ferrari’s season has fallen far short of expectations. After ending the 2024 campaign with strong momentum and finishing narrowly behind McLaren in the championship fight, the Maranello outfit entered the new year with optimism—especially with Lewis Hamilton’s high-profile arrival and renewed hopes of a return to title contention. Instead, the team has slipped backwards, fading to fourth place among the top contenders and failing to mount anything resembling a challenge for the constructors’ championship.
The contrast between expectations and reality has created a tense atmosphere within the team. Ferrari chairman John Elkann recently expressed frustration publicly, questioning the drivers’ comments and urging greater focus as the team’s form worsened. The criticism has ignited fresh debate about the stability of the project and whether Ferrari is capable of delivering a title-winning car in the near future.
Despite the chaos, the Monegasque has delivered consistently strong performances, collecting seven podium finishes and often extracting more pace from the SF-25 than the underlying package seemed to offer. His resilience, professionalism and popularity inside the paddock have made him one of Ferrari’s most valuable assets. Schumacher argued that these qualities should prompt Charles Leclerc to carefully evaluate his future.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Ralf Schumacher suggested that if he were in Charles Leclerc’s position, he would already be questioning the long-term purpose of remaining with the Scuderia given their stalled progress. He believed Leclerc has been operating at an exceptionally high level, maximising both his own performance and that of the team around him, while also being a strong cultural fit for Ferrari as a well-liked and grounded personality preparing for marriage.
Drawing on his own Formula 1 career with Jordan, Williams and Toyota, Ralf Schumacher explained that he always kept alternative options available when a project seemed uncertain. He encouraged Charles Leclerc to adopt the same strategic mindset and ensure that discussions about potential opportunities outside Ferrari are happening behind the scenes.
Ralf Schumacher added that he would not allow himself to be “fooled” into believing things would automatically improve, advising Charles Leclerc to remain vigilant as Ferrari edges toward a winless season. He noted that sending his manager to explore the wider F1 market would be a sensible step, particularly at a time when several teams may be reshaping their line-ups for the 2026 regulation overhaul.
With Ferrari facing one of its most challenging seasons in recent memory, the pressure on the team’s leadership and future competitiveness is intensifying. For Charles Leclerc, who has long dreamed of winning a world championship with the Scuderia, Schumacher’s warning underscores the reality that loyalty alone may not be enough to secure the success he deserves.
