Charles holding back his frustration
For the seventh season since donning the Ferrari suit, Charles Leclerc is once again forced to pin his hopes on the following year in his quest to fulfil his ambition of fighting for the world title with the Scuderia. The Monegasque has never truly been in contention for the championship – except during the early stages of 2022 – and at 27 years old, he is still waiting for his chance.
Fred Vasseur’s renewal
CLeclerc has often praised team principal Frederic Vasseur, and the renewal of his contract can only please him, as he told Sky Italia: “I’m happy, Fred is not only a great person but has also helped the whole team to take a calmer view of situations. I’ve always said that the positive and negative side of Ferrari is the level of passion within the team. When things go well, you live everything at 2000% and it’s the best moment in life, but when times are tough, it is often mentally harder to bounce back.” Vasseur’s balance is key: “Fred has always been a point of reference, he levels out those emotions a lot and that’s what’s needed at Ferrari to work well. I’m happy to work with him for more years.”
Steps forward
Speaking to Carlo Vanzini, Leclerc continued: “Improvements come little by little. We have definitely taken steps in the right direction. We’re certainly not satisfied with the current situation and always want more, but there is satisfaction with the progress we have made.” The Monegasque then referred to the intense anticipation that built up over the winter, when hopes were high that after finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship, Ferrari could fight for the title: “In the winter there was a lot of hype around the team, and that altered the perception of our season. We’re not where we want to be, because Ferrari can only aim to win, but McLaren has made a frightening step forward, while we have progressed at the level of Mercedes and Red Bull, with whom we are now battling for second place.”
