In recent days Ferrari has found itself back under heavy media scrutiny after several controversial statements made by John Elkann. Following the disastrous Brazilian Grand Prix, the President released a comment to the media saying that “the drivers should talk less and drive more”.
These were strong and rather misplaced words, especially considering that if the Scuderia has not won anything for 18 years, the issue certainly cannot be blamed on those behind the wheel. Over the years, both rookies and multiple world champions have achieved the same results, which shows the limitations go far beyond the drivers. Several figures within the paddock have openly criticized John Elkann’s remarks, but Charles Leclerc chose a different approach and instead defended the position of his boss.
“John and I have known each other for many years. I know he is very ambitious and pushes everyone to give their absolute best. He loves Ferrari as much as we do, and we always try to give everything in every situation. I didn’t see the exact wording, only the reports, but he had called me beforehand, as he does before every race, telling me that the message he wanted to send was a positive one. It was something like ‘We need to do better’, and we all know that. We have the same objective: to bring Ferrari back to the top. I have always admitted that in the past and I have always given everything, but I will try to push even harder,” the Monegasque driver told the media ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, as reported by Autosport.
“Maybe it wasn’t expressed in the best possible way, but it’s not my job to comment on the form. We knew his intention was positive, and that is what matters.” – the Monegasque driver concluded ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend.
