Leclerc completes SF-26 filming day running at Monza as Ferrari gather key data from first upgrade package
Charles Leclerc has taken the updated SF-26 out for its first proper run featuring Ferrari’s initial upgrade package during the filming day at Monza. The session focused on collecting early data from the new specification, with attention on the laps completed by the Monegasque driver and the performance indicators recorded on track.
The Ferrari driver completed his allocated portion of the filming day at the Brianza circuit, leaving the remaining running duties to Lewis Hamilton. As previously detailed, the SF-26 features a significant number of updates, making this session an important milestone in preparation for the Miami Grand Prix. The “Macarena” rear wing also made an appearance in video footage, while the focus remained on lap count and representative performance runs.
Leclerc completes 19 laps as fans gather at Monza
The first footage of Charles Leclerc on track emerged around 11:14 this morning, showing the Ferrari running at full speed along the straight leading into the Ascari corner. The choice of circuit section was not random. The introduction of the reverse wing concept in this area allows Ferrari to evaluate its benefits and test the new specification, which—without the side effects seen in its initial version—could deliver up to 10 km/h of additional top speed.
Monza is also particularly useful for understanding how to optimise energy management, especially in light of the latest regulatory directives. According to information reported by Fulvio Vigilante, Charles Leclerc’s fastest lap was set at 1:27.138, with a total of 19 laps completed during his running. The #16 driver also carried out several practice starts to further refine launch procedures.
From the available video material, it was possible to observe the activation of the Macarena rear wing on the main straight. This system is part of Ferrari’s effort to ensure maximum readiness ahead of the American round of the championship. Closing the gap to Mercedes remains a clear target, and this first major upgrade package is expected to provide the long-awaited confirmation of performance direction.
A significant number of Ferrari fans were present around the circuit, attempting to catch glimpses and capture images of the SF-26 in action. However, Ferrari imposed strict restrictions, blocking visibility and access across key areas of the track to maintain full confidentiality of the testing programme.
The day also included a special visit from Ferrari employees and team members’ families, who had the opportunity to meet Lewis Hamilton. There is a strong sense of excitement around the Italian team, which is entirely expected given the scale of anticipation surrounding the upgrade programme.
Attention now turns to Lewis Hamilton’s afternoon running, with interest high in what additional insights the seven-time world champion will be able to extract from the SF-26 package.
