While the 2026 Formula 1 season continues to deliver intense battles on track, important work is already underway behind the scenes to prepare for the future. At the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Ferrari joined a crucial Pirelli testing program aimed at developing the next generation of slick tires that could be used in upcoming seasons.
The test represented another important chapter in the collaboration between Formula 1 teams and the Italian tire manufacturer, with Ferrari, Aston Martin and Cadillac all contributing valuable data under challenging summer conditions.
For Ferrari, the session provided an opportunity not only to support tire development but also to deepen its understanding of tire behavior in extreme temperatures. The Barcelona circuit offered a particularly demanding environment, with track temperatures climbing to an intense 57 degrees Celsius and ambient temperatures reaching approximately 34 degrees.
Charles Leclerc shoulders Ferrari’s demanding workload
Among all drivers on track, Charles Leclerc completed one of the most intensive programs of the day. The Ferrari driver spent hour after hour gathering data for engineers, completing an impressive 134 laps and covering approximately 624 kilometers.
In addition to logging substantial mileage, Charles Leclerc also topped the unofficial timesheets with a best lap of 1:16.619, underlining Ferrari’s productive day at the Spanish venue.
However, lap times were never the primary objective. The real focus was understanding how various tire constructions and compounds behaved under different loads, fuel levels and track conditions.
The testing schedule was divided into two distinct phases. During the morning session, teams evaluated several structural variations of the C2 compound through shorter performance-focused runs. Engineers carefully analyzed tire behavior over a series of controlled stints designed to generate precise comparative data.
Once the most promising configurations had been identified, attention shifted in the afternoon toward longer race-style simulations. These extended runs allowed Pirelli to assess wear rates, thermal degradation and consistency over larger distances, all key factors in future tire development.
Ferrari continues to play a key role in future development
The significance of these tests extends far beyond a single day at Barcelona. Tire performance remains one of the most influential variables in modern Formula 1, affecting race strategy, overtaking opportunities and overall competitiveness.
For Ferrari, helping Pirelli refine future compounds also provides valuable insight into how upcoming tires may interact with evolving car concepts. As teams continue to push aerodynamic performance and efficiency to new levels, understanding tire characteristics becomes increasingly important.
Following Ferrari’s recent resurgence, highlighted by Lewis Hamilton’s breakthrough victory in Spain, every opportunity to gather technical knowledge carries additional value. Data collected during private testing programs often contributes to a team’s broader understanding of vehicle dynamics and tire management.
Aston Martin completes extensive mileage
Aston Martin also enjoyed a productive day, with Jak Crawford completing the highest lap count among the participating drivers. The American covered 146 laps, equivalent to approximately 680 kilometers, while recording a best lap of 1:23.709.
The extensive mileage allowed Aston Martin engineers and Pirelli technicians to gather a substantial amount of information across multiple test configurations, making the session particularly valuable from a development perspective.
Technical setbacks limit Cadillac’s running
Not every team enjoyed a smooth program. Cadillac’s day was interrupted by technical difficulties that significantly reduced the amount of track time available to Zhou Guanyu.
The Chinese driver completed only 54 laps, totaling around 251 kilometers, before the issues curtailed the team’s planned schedule. Despite the setbacks, Zhou Guanyu still managed to record a fastest lap of 1:21.543 while collecting useful data whenever the car was on track.
Although the mileage fell well short of Cadillac‘s objectives, every lap remains valuable as the American project continues its preparations and development work.
Arthur Leclerc set to continue Ferrari’s work
The Barcelona testing program is scheduled to continue with Ferrari and Cadillac remaining in action. Zhou Guanyu is expected to stay behind the wheel for Cadillac, while Ferrari will hand over duties to Arthur Leclerc.
The younger Leclerc brother will take over from Charles Leclerc as the Scuderia continues supporting Pirelli’s development efforts. The session will provide Arthur Leclerc with additional mileage while allowing Ferrari to contribute further data to one of Formula 1’s most important technical projects.
As the championship battle intensifies on track, the work being carried out in Barcelona highlights that Formula 1 teams are always looking ahead. For Ferrari, Charles Leclerc’s extensive testing program was not simply about today’s performance, but about helping shape the tires that could influence the sport’s future for years to come.
