Charles Leclerc is in his fifth season with Scuderia Ferrari, and he always has the same goal: to become world champion with the Maranello team. The Monegasque impressed early on, winning the Formula 2 title before making the leap into Formula 1, where he made his debut for Sauber.
Charles had the opportunity to impose himself on the rest of the grid during the 2022 Formula One season, but then Red Bull and Max Verstappen proved to be perfect and defeated his competition.
Given the inexorably passing of time and a contract with the Maranello team now running out, what is the most convenient move for number 16? Would it be better to change teams as Fernando Alonso recently did? Let’s find out.
In 2019, during his first year with Scuderia Ferrari, Charles Leclerc immediately managed to get a five-year extension. The agreement will expire at the end of next season, and, given the Italian side’s difficulties, the Monegasque could start looking around to decide his future.
As reported by racingnews365, if Charles Leclerc decides to change teams, he will still want a car on the front line and will not go to a midfield team with a view to building a project for the future. Until the new regulation change, which will arrive in 2026, therefore the only plausible options remain Mercedes, Red Bull and Aston Martin. Sergio Perez’s contract will expire at the end of the 2024 F1 campaign, just like the contract of the Ferrari driver and the results scored this year will be fundamental for the Mexican’s renewal, even if the relationship with Max Verstappen would now seem to be very bad.

If the partnership between the Dutchman and Checo were to end, would the world champion allow Red Bull to sign his number one rival for the 2022 title? Unlikely.

Moving on to Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso has a multi-year contract, while the team’s second car will carry the Lance Stroll name as long as the Canadian wants to race in Formula 1. So the only plausible opportunity for Charles Leclerc would seem to be Mercedes, but there is no guarantee that Toto Wolff’s team will recover the performance gap to Red Bull before the Maranello team. This means that Charles Leclerc will most likely have to bet everything on the Italian team and hope that the car will be competitive again as soon as possible.
