Fifth place for the Monegasque
Charles Leclerc finished fifth in the Canadian GP, gaining one position at the end due to Lando Norris’ mistake, as the Briton crashed while trying to overtake teammate Oscar Piastri.
The Ferrari driver had started on hard tyres and had hoped to attempt a one-stop strategy. George Russell caught and overtook him after making his pit stop, but Max Verstappen appeared to struggle more to attack Leclerc despite having significantly fresher tyres. At that point, Ferrari called Charles Leclerc into the pits, prompting his radio response: “I really don’t understand this choice, the tyres were still in good shape.”
Charles Leclerc commented on the race to Sky Sport F1: “I felt good on the hard tyres, I saw George Russell was going faster, but not significantly faster, and he had confidence on the mediums also based on what Hamilton had done. That said, the pit wall undoubtedly has more data than we do in the cockpit. I wasn’t in a good position during the race because I compromised the weekend with Friday’s mistake in FP1 and bad luck in Qualifying. Am I less calm seeing younger drivers win? No, it’s frustrating not to have a car capable of winning, but what others do doesn’t affect my state of mind.” – the Monegasque driver concluded at the end of the race which was held at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal.
