Charles Leclerc will not have to serve a grid penalty at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after Ferrari successfully cleared the ADUO-2 power unit involved in his Monza accident. The positive outcome means the Monegasque can attack qualifying in Baku with pole position as the objective without knowing that an engine change will automatically send him backwards on the starting grid.
It is welcome news for Ferrari after uncertainty surrounded the condition of the updated power unit following Charles Leclerc’s accident at the exit of the Parabolica at Monza. The ADUO-2 unit has now officially been declared usable, allowing the Scuderia to keep it in the pool for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Ferrari clears Charles Leclerc’s ADUO-2 power unit for Baku
Ferrari had been assessing whether the Monza power unit could continue to be used or whether Charles Leclerc would need another engine, a decision that carried the risk of a grid penalty in Baku. The importance of the choice was increased by the demands of the Azerbaijan circuit, where Ferrari is already facing a significant energy-management test on the long Baku straights.
The Maranello team also broke the curfew on Thursday evening to complete all the necessary checks on the power unit. Those inspections produced a positive result, confirming that the ADUO-2 specification involved in the Monza crash can still be used.
No Azerbaijan GP grid penalty for Charles Leclerc
The outcome removes the immediate threat of an engine-related grid drop for Charles Leclerc. He can therefore focus entirely on qualifying and attempt to secure pole position without having to surrender places afterwards because of a new power unit installation.
For Ferrari, retaining the updated ADUO-2 is particularly valuable at a circuit where power unit performance plays such an important role. The demands of Baku’s straights also make Formula 1 top-speed data especially relevant when assessing the performance differences between Ferrari and its rivals.
The positive checks therefore give both Charles Leclerc and Ferrari an important boost before qualifying. The Monegasque will be able to use the updated power unit in Azerbaijan without the grid penalty that would have followed the introduction of another unit.
