Will Formula 1 cars really reach 400 km/h in 2026?
At Zandvoort, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen were asked about one of the hottest topics in Formula 1: the possibility of cars reaching a staggering 400 km/h under the new regulations set for 2026. The discussion was sparked by recent comments from Toto Wolff, who suggested that the combination of more powerful hybrid engines and fresh aerodynamic rules could push cars to unprecedented speeds. While Charles Leclerc urged caution and stressed that nothing is certain yet, Max Verstappen responded with his trademark irony, joking about Mercedes’ supposed engine superiority before offering a more technical viewpoint.
Charles Leclerc’s cautious view
Charles Leclerc admitted that while such figures sound impressive, it is far too early to make definitive predictions. “400 km/h would be really fast, I don’t know. I have already shared a bit of my opinion on what will happen next year: it will be a little strange. The way we will reach those speeds… but it’s only the beginning, and I think development is going so quickly that every time you get into the simulator, things have already changed, and changed a lot. In the end, it could become more normal than I first expected, but we will see.”
The Ferrari driver emphasized just how quickly things are moving in the early stages of the 2026 car development process: “I think we just need to wait and see, because right now the development curve is massive. You can say something one week, and by the next week it has already changed with a completely different window. But if we really do reach those speeds, it will be pretty impressive. With active aerodynamics, with the front wing also working like a DRS… we will see.”
Verstappen’s ironic response
After Toto Wolff suggested that 400 km/h could be possible with the upcoming hybrid power units and new aero rules, Verstappen could not resist poking fun at his rivals. “Maybe Toto’s engine will get there,” joked the four-time world champion, a comment that quickly circulated around the paddock.
However, Max Verstappen then offered a more serious perspective, noting that the FIA is unlikely to allow unlimited speed potential: “I think the FIA has already explained it quite well: they won’t allow certain speeds on some circuits. I don’t want to say there will be a strict limit, but there is attention being paid to avoid going too far in terms of energy.”
A divided paddock on 400 km/h potential
The idea of Formula 1 cars touching 400 km/h has split opinions in the paddock. On one side, drivers like Charles Leclerc call for patience and caution, pointing out that rapid development means predictions are unreliable. On the other side, Max Verstappen prefers to respond with humor, while still highlighting the regulatory and technical risks that come with such extreme performance.
One thing is clear: the 2026 regulations are set to usher in a radically different Formula 1 era. Whether or not cars will ever hit 400 km/h, top speed promises to be one of the most talked-about issues as the sport prepares for its next revolution.
