It’s now a regular feature on the Formula 1 calendar. On the eve of one of the most iconic Grands Prix of the season, the Monaco street race, drivers also face off away from the track. In 2025, they’ll once again take part in the traditional charity football match, with Leclerc as one of the standout names. Here’s all the info on the event.
It all started in the 1970s, becoming a regular event from the 1980s onwards, when the first edition of the so-called “Match des Pilotes” took place during the Monte Carlo weekend. Over the years, it has drawn drivers and global celebrities who compete under the watchful eyes of the Prince. Participants over time have included Schumacher, Alonso, Ayrton Senna (as a spectator), and many more.
This year, as the event passes the 35-year mark, the match will follow tradition. On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at 3:00 p.m., the biggest names in international motorsport will take to the field at the Louis-II Stadium in the Principality of Monaco, including local star Charles Leclerc.
“Racing Stars Football Cup” is the new name for the 2025 edition, which will feature two competitive teams:
– I Barbagiuans Monaco: legends of professional football including Chevanton, Giuly, and Roma, joined by music, film, and social media celebrities
– The Drivers’ Team: made up of drivers from Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, and other iconic motorsport figures
The aim of the match is clear: to raise funds for two important charities. The first is the Jules Bianchi Association. Founded following the tragic 2014 accident, it supports the USCL center by funding innovative medical equipment to improve rehabilitation and patient care. The second is Be Safe Monaco, which combats drunk driving and raises awareness among young people about responsible driving.
The names already confirmed for the Drivers’ National Team include: Charles Leclerc, Tony Cairoli, Carlos Sainz, Kimi Antonelli, Ivan Capelli, Stefano Domenicali, Thierry Neuville, Gabriele Tarquini, Lorenzo Patrese, Isack Hadjar, Riccardo Patrese, Giancarlo Fisichella, Maro Engel, and Andreas Mikkelsen.
