Carlos Sainz’s Brazilian GP
The day ended exactly as it started, with the Ferrari crumpled against the barriers. After the crash in Q2 at Senna’s S, Carlos Sainz Jr. had an unfortunate repeat at Laranjinha, the challenging uphill right turn that opens the mixed-slow section of the second sector. An incident apparently caused by touching the white line – slipperier due to the paint – while braking, but one that the Spanish driver cannot fully explain.
Carlos Sainz explains the crashes
“It’s true that I touched the line, but everyone else was using that racing line as well,” Carlos Sainz said in the interview ring after the Brazilian GP checkered flag, “and nothing ever happened. So yes, it’s a real shame it went this way. At the same time, I really felt uncomfortable with the car, which had a strange feeling in the wet. It’s hard to understand the reason, but this year it’s always been a bit of a nightmare driving this car in the rain. I’ve never been happy in the wet, and today was just another example. Usually, I’m fast in the wet, but this time it was impossible, and I had two crashes that, frankly, I can’t explain very well.” – the Spaniard pointed out at the end of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Apologies to Ferrari
“It was a very tough day,” the Spaniard added, “and I made two mistakes that aren’t good for me or for the team in the Constructors’ Championship, so I apologize. At the same time, I have to say that starting from the pit lane, I don’t think there was much chance of scoring a lot of points, especially considering where Checo and Lewis (Perez and Hamilton, ed.) finished. Overtaking was very difficult, and visibility on track was minimal, but that’s racing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I’m not worried, but it’s true that we’ll have to try to understand why the feeling in the wet has never been good this year.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
