In the complex shuffle of the driver market that has been unfolding for several months, Carlos Sainz risks being the only top driver left without a seat for the next Formula 1 championship.
Jordan Goes Against the Grain
The Spaniard, after being let go by Scuderia Ferrari at the start of the 2024 Formula 1 season, was long linked to Mercedes for the post-Hamilton era and a possible return to the Red Bull family alongside Max Verstappen. However, these teams chose different paths, with Toto Wolff deciding to focus on Kimi Antonelli and Christian Horner renewing his trust in Sergio Perez for another two years.
Thus, the options for Carlos Sainz have been dwindling. After waiting for a long time, he seems to have finally decided to accept the offer from James Vowles, with a four-year contract that allows him to exit Williams at the end of 2026 if expectations are not met.
However, despite all signs pointing to an imminent agreement, Eddie Jordan believes the deal won’t happen as planned: “I’ve long considered Albon a fabulously talented driver,” the Irish businessman commented on the Formula For Success podcast, co-hosted with David Coulthard.
“When Frank Williams and Patrick Head were there, along with Adrian Newey, they were the team to beat. They were absolutely fantastic. Seeing where they are now is a bit of a shame.”
“Can they recover? Sure. Anyone can recover. However, it’s a much more difficult task nowadays because it’s financially driven. Carlos Sainz has been mentioned as a candidate. Do I see it happening? Honestly, I don’t. It won’t happen.” – he pointed out – “Carlos is in a confusing situation. He must feel very, very disappointed about being shown the door by Ferrari because I don’t think he did anything wrong. He performed well, behaved excellently, and won races for them. What more could he have done?”
Carlos Sainz has not denied his interest in the English team, although he has reiterated that he has not yet made a final decision: “The only thing I can tell you is that nothing is decided. I’ve seen news in the media – I don’t know if in Spain – from people saying I had signed, and when I see these things, it makes me laugh.” – he added.

“I remember three months ago seeing news that said I had signed for Mercedes or Red Bull, which won’t happen. It’s strange that now they say I’ve signed for Williams, and sometimes these media reports go unpunished. It worries me that people can do this kind of thing without it being confirmed or anything. When I have something to announce, you will be the first to know and I will be here to talk about it openly.” – he concluded.
