Future Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz hopes to return to the podium at Monza alongside the Maranello team with the 100,000 tifosi there to cheer him on. Before any of the drama kicked off at the Italian Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz was already looking a good bet for P2 after clearing Valtteri Bottas at the start and building up a nice gap over McLaren team-mate Lando Norris who ran P3 early on.
Once the dust had settled after the Safety Car, red flags and penalties, Carlos was still in P2 but with Pierre Gasly ahead this time instead of Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard would reel the AlphaTauri driver in on the last lap but couldn’t find a way to claim victory, though P2 in the MCL35 was a very satisfying consolation prize.
The 2020 Formula One championship will be Carlos Sainz’s final season with McLaren before he heads to Scuderia Ferrari, and he admitted that it would have been nice if the Italian fans were there to see his P2, presuming they would have given their future driver a great ovation.
“What I’m sure is, if there would have been tifosi, they would have been pretty happy and proud and that makes me excited about the future,” he is quoted by GPFans – “Also a bit gutted that there was no one down there, apart obviously from my team and everyone involved in Formula 1, but it makes me excited and makes me look forward to the future. Hopefully it’s my first podium in Monza, not my last, and hopefully many will come with Ferrari. I’m ready for it, I cannot wait for it to happen. I just cannot imagine what it would have been like with 100,000 people. We get to finish on the podium in the coolest race of the season and no one is there to see us. Hopefully, we will get it in the future. I think we all have the potential to do it again so let’s see.” – the Spanish driver explained.
