It hasn’t exactly been a fortunate weekend (so far) for Carlos Sainz and his Ferrari at the Dutch Grand Prix: the Spaniard faced a shocking elimination from Q3. On Sunday, the Ferrari driver will have to start from 11th place at the 4.259-kilometre Circuit Zandvoort, next to Lewis Hamilton, who will replace the Spanish driver in Maranello starting with the 2025 Formula 1 championship.
This has certainly not been an easy weekend for Carlos Sainz. After dealing with rain issues during the first free practice session, he was forced to watch FP2 from the garage due to a gearbox problem. As if that wasn’t enough, no one was able to get much track time during the final free practice session due to Logan Sargeant’s serious crash.
In short, qualifying was anything but a smooth ride for the Ferrari driver. At the end of Q2, Carlos Sainz expressed all his disappointment and frustration, fully aware that not being able to test his SF-24 during the practice sessions was a major setback.
“Yesterday, I barely had a chance to drive the car, and that definitely didn’t help. I expected we could do a bit better, but it was very complicated. I had hardly tested the soft compound, and that made balancing the car difficult,” Carlos Sainz explained at the end of the qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix.
“There are no miracles in this sport. If you miss sessions, there’s nothing you can do. We were missing something, and this weekend we’re not fast. We can try to do something, but overtaking will be complicated tomorrow. Plus, I believe the others will be faster than us tomorrow, so the situation is quite compromised.” This is how a disappointed Carlos Sainz concluded.
