There was a glimmer of hope that Peter Bonnington might follow Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, continuing a partnership that has lasted 12 years. However, just yesterday, it was confirmed that Mercedes has promoted “Bono” to Head of Race Engineering, a role that seals his contract renewal. In his day-to-day work, not much will change, and he will still be heard speaking in his drivers’ headsets at least until the end of 2025.
Speaking to the media ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, the British champion did not hide his regret at parting ways with such a long-standing friendship, even though he knows that the adventures awaiting both of them are what’s best for their careers: “About seven years ago, there was a recurring joke, we both dreamed of going to Ferrari one day, but then there were no further discussions. I’m happy for Bono, though. In my heart, I always wanted him to make the best choices for himself and his family. Nothing will change between us, we just won’t be working side by side every day anymore. It will be sad and emotional for both of us, but we will remain an integral part of each other’s lives. Bono is my brother. I’m glad the team has promoted him and that he has this great opportunity for growth because he is an important part of the team.” – the future Ferrari driver concluded.
