In a season of transition and rebirth for Scuderia Ferrari – which went from the disaster of 2020 to being able to fight with McLaren for third place in the 2021 Formula 1 Constructor Standings, with hope of competing for the world title again next year – the happiest note seems to be the performance of the two drivers in 2021. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz probably represent the best partnership in Formula One when it comes to proximity in performance, speed and mutual understanding. If the qualities of the Monegasque driver were known, what surprised positively was Carlos Sainz’s ability to quickly adapt to the new ‘red’ reality. The two are currently in the sixth and seventh place in the drivers’ standings and are the two closest teammates in percentage by number of points obtained compared to each other.
Such a situation, in a ‘historically’ top team like Ferrari, often risks leading to dislikes and rivalries within the garage. However, this is not the case. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz despite having as their first goal to surpass each other, seem able to put the common good of Maranello ahead of everything. Their direct challenge seems to help them extract the best of their qualities, without feeding dangerous dualisms. The great relationship between them that reigns under the name of the Maranello team, was confirmed by Carlos Sainz himself, in an interview for the Esquire.com website.
“The relationship between me and Charles? Splendid, I couldn’t ask for better. Since we spend a lot of time together it is important to feel good also personally, and it is definitely our case” – Carlos Sainz underlined – “We do a lot of things together: we play chess, padel, golf”. For the former McLaren driver, joining Ferrari was like turning a dream into reality, despite the good relationship that tied him to the Woking team. “It was a very important step in my career, I would say fundamental: becoming a Ferrari driver is every driver’s dream. I managed to do it at 26 and my life has changed since then. I want to give the best to this team and help get it back to the top.” – Carlos Sainz conclded.
