Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz reflects on the importance of fans and the downside of being a celebrity:
How important are the fans in general?
Carlos Sainz: “Before the pandemic, unfortunately, perhaps we almost took them all for granted, as if they were part of the race weekend. Then came the time when fans only existed on TV, and I really missed them and appreciated the importance. I don’t notice the fans in the stands during the race, but in the moments immediately before and immediately after they are very important. Ferrari also has a particularly large and very warm fan base, it is a real legend, but unfortunately when I joined the team I could not experience this, due to the restrictions for the pandemic. Now that things are improving and the restrictions are loosening, I am starting to understand…”

How is it to be a celebrity? Does it also have annoying parts?
Carlos Sainz: “Few times. Surely, if I think about it a little, I can find some annoying moments, but in general I consider myself a very lucky person: I do a job that I love, I have realized many dreams in my life, like that of being in Ferrari… I don’t look much to the downsides. Yes, if you are famous, people criticize you on social media, but this will always happen, just don’t give it too much weight. In real life, relations with fans are positive: sometimes they ask you for photos or autographs, which maybe when you are on a relaxing day may not be ideal, but many come up just to tell you that they are your fans and wish you all the best. The fans who really make you feel special are the ones who tell you that they look at you every weekend, and they charge you to do better and push more and more, and I thank them very much.”
