Carlos Sainz Sr. explains how his son was a great help in the Dakar strategy and expresses confidence in the Audi project in Formula 1. Carlos Sainz Sr. has won the Dakar 2024 with his Audi. For “El Matador,” it is the fourth rally title, making him the oldest driver (61 years old) to conquer the competition.
Strength and intelligence were the key qualities that allowed him to win. Crossing the finish line first wouldn’t have been possible without the Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 driver, who not only supported him but also offered some small pieces of advice.
In an interview with the media, Carlos Sainz Sr. praised the skills of the Maranello team’s driver, who indicated the best strategy to follow. The winner of Dakar 2024 admitted that he and his son consulted each other between stages.
“Perhaps it was the smartest Dakar,” said Sainz Sr. “I also thank Carlos; he is very mature, has such a mentality… with Carlos, we talked before and after each stage. It was very helpful. When he has a strategy, sometimes he exposes it, in part or entirely. For me, it was a great advantage to exchange impressions, and he has a good read.”
In reality, father and son often exchange opinions about their respective professional lives. It is logical to think that they have discussed Audi’s entry into Formula 1. Carlos Sr. believes it is a great opportunity for his son if he doesn’t achieve what he wants in Ferrari.
“I have two experiences with them. I know very well the seriousness with which they approach every project; I know what the German mentality implies, the advantages, and disadvantages,” Carlos Sainz senior confided. “If Audi wants him, it will be a matter of time,” he emphasized regarding his son’s possible signing.
“If they decide to participate, they have all my respect, and they are putting everything in place to make it a good project suitable for all drivers. Between Carlos and me, it is normal for us to exchange comments,” he concluded.
