Carlos Sainz does not hide his intentions, aware that this will be his last Barcelona race alongside the Maranello team. The Spaniard hopes to give his fans and himself an unforgettable weekend and possibly fight for victory, despite Ferrari coming off a double retirement in the last outing in Montreal.
Ferrari in Spain to win
The Maranello team aims to leave the recent past behind by introducing a large part of the second package of seasonal updates, initially planned for Silverstone. These updates include a new floor and changes in the diffuser area, tray, and other minor aerodynamic tweaks.
With the new upgrades, the SF24 should return to pre-Monaco levels of competitiveness, although Red Bull and McLaren remain strong contenders for victory this weekend.
Speaking at the press conference on the eve of the weekend, Carlos Sainz reviewed what happened at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal: “Canada was tough for us, but we did the necessary analysis and learned the lesson.” – the Ferrari driver pointed out ahead of his home Grand Prix.
“Unfortunately, the weekend did not go well. It was unusual due to some errors: we made mistakes with both the tires and the setup. There will always be weekends in a season where you perform below expectations. Here we are on a more conventional track that we know well. We hope to get everything right.” – he added.
Continuing, the number 55 set the goal for the home weekend: “I think there is a chance to win, but I await the practice sessions to understand how big these chances are. I can’t describe how special it would be to win here with Ferrari. I wouldn’t have the words to describe the feelings.”
Finally, Carlos Sainz expects great balance at the top and tight qualifying, as has been the case in recent races: “It is said that Barcelona is important for the rest of the season. That might have been true before, but now there are many street circuits with very different characteristics. If you are strong here, you will be strong at Silverstone and other tracks, which are only a few on the calendar. I expect a compact grid, with a fight in Q1 and Q2. You can’t make any mistakes, as we saw in Canada.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
