Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will start in sixth position tomorrow, in his first Italian Grand Prix as a driver for the Maranello team, in front of the Tifosi. Today the sprint race took place at Monza, a tasty ‘appetizer’ of the Italian weekend and saw the Spaniard finish in seventh place. However, the penalty received by Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes decided to use a new power unit on his car) for will go to the advantage of the SF21 number 55 car of Carlos, who terefore gains a position for the start of the race. In the constructors’ standings, the challenge for the reds is not loosing too much ground against McLaren, in the fight for third place. Today, however, the two cars from Woking proved to have a better pace.
“I don’t know if they are opponents for tomorrow – admitted Carlos Sainz, who last year at Monza with the papaya-colored car came close to victory, in an interview for Sky Sport F1 – because they start in front and are 2-3 faster than us. I drove that car here a year ago and I know how strong it is. And at the time it didn’t have a Mercedes engine. This year they have a Mercedes engine that gave him 3-4 tenths more. Tomorrow with a good start and a good strategy, maybe we can try to finish in front of one of them. Honestly, however, I think they are ahead of us this weekend” – the Spanish driver explained.
Carlos Sainz then went back to analyzing this particular day, which began with a big crash in the second free practice session at Monza: “The crash was stronger than I expected. The neck is fine now, but tomorrow morning, after sleeping, it will be worse. I’ll have to do some massages. I took a hard blow and the accident was very strange. We struggle in that corner, we are oversteering. On that occasion I was not pushing. And losing the car without pushing takes your confidence – explained Carlos – today in the race in the first 5-10 laps I arrived there and slowed down a bit. In the end, however, I found some confidence.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
