Sainz beats Hamilton 1-0: “I don’t care about what others do”
During the post-race press conference, Carlos Sainz was asked about the fact that he managed to reach the podium before the driver who replaced him at Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton.
Predictions turned upside down
When the 2025 season line-ups were confirmed a year ago, with Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari to replace Carlos Sainz, and the Spanish driver transferring to Williams, few could have imagined that the first of the two to reach a Grand Prix podium would be the Madrid-born driver. Yet, that is exactly what happened. Sainz, after a flawless weekend, brought Williams back into the top three for the first time in four years, while the seven-time world champion remained largely unnoticed in Azerbaijan, finishing the Grand Prix in eighth place.
Unsurprisingly, the journalists at Baku did not miss the chance to tease Sainz about this during the post-race press conference. The Spanish driver, however, skillfully avoided any controversy, while still emphasizing how special this result was for him on one of the most unique and challenging tracks of the season.
Carlos Sainz stays clear of controversy
When asked if he was pleased to achieve his first podium with Williams before Hamilton managed the same with Ferrari, Carlos Sainz responded, “My first podium with Williams came before Lewis claimed his first podium with Ferrari? Honestly, I don’t care about what others do. What matters to me is that we seized the first opportunity I had to reach the podium with Williams and the first opportunity Williams had to secure a podium. We made it happen.”
Just on Thursday, during the traditional pre-weekend interviews, Carlos Sainz had already expressed his belief in joining the ‘fallen noble’ British team despite the many challenges he faced so far this season. His confidence in the project initiated by team principal James Vowles has been rewarded.
