The Spanish driver commented on his incident in FP2 in Abu Dhabi.
Sainz hits the wall in Abu Dhabi
The last weekend of the season didn’t start well for Carlos Sainz. In FP2 in Abu Dhabi, the Spaniard, a key player on whom Ferrari relies to surpass Mercedes in the race for the second position in the constructors’ standings, spun at turn 3 after hitting a bump on the renewed asphalt of Yas Marina. Ending up against the wall, he emerged unharmed from a car that had serious damage. According to the Spaniard, these damages shouldn’t lead to any penalties, but they will undoubtedly require the mechanics to put in extra work, something that, especially at the end of the season, could have been avoided.
Sainz’s words
“Obviously, it wasn’t the Friday we wanted to kick off the weekend. Unfortunately, I hit a big bump: it’s a heavy mistake. Tomorrow we’ll be back on track and ready to fight for a qualifying that we expect to be interesting, with very close values,” commented the Spaniard.
“For some reason, there have been changes to the track, too many bumps: one at the exit of turn 2, one at the entrance of turn 3, and this generation of cars suffers a lot from them. Already in FP1, I was about to go off, so I changed something in the setup to get rid of the problem, but for some reason, it happened in the second practice. A small bump is enough, and with this generation of cars, you spin. Unfortunately, I couldn’t control the car; it went off, and it was one of those moments when you’re a passenger in your car. Anyway, we shouldn’t incur any penalties, which is good for the rest of the weekend.”
“Either way, I feel good. It was a pretty big accident, but once again, it showed how with these safe cars, you can emerge unscathed even from quite strong impacts, and that was the case. Of course, I’m sorry for what happened in FP2, especially for giving the mechanics extra work today, but overall, there’s nothing to worry about.”
