The 2022 British Grand Prix was marked by many controversies for Scuderia Ferrari: a weekend that started with the pole position – the first in his career – by Carlos Sainz and should have ended with an easy one-two finish with Charles Leclerc ahead of his Maranello teammate. But then a strange strategy decision from the Ferrari pit wall instead sent the Monegasque driver to fourth place. At the end of the British Grand Prix, a clearly and justifiably upset Charles Leclerc came out of the car and then the discussion with Mattia Binotto and the famous finger broadcast worldwide as a public reprimand, which was not accepted by the majority of the fans, who would have wanted a clear role of the hierarchies in Ferrari from the beginning of the 2022 Formula One season in order to maximize ranking points.
The criticisms that targeted the Scuderia from Maranello diverted attention from Carlos Sainz’s performance, who perhaps would not have won without the final Safety Car, but still was the protagonist of a very solid weekend. In the end, the Spanish driver went to to secure his first Formula 1 victory. And yet, the Smooth Operator is an analytical driver, capable of balancing even the cons of a day that he remembers as a fond memory. And then, perhaps surprisingly, he believes that Silverstone 2022 was not his best race of the season in terms of performance.
“My best weekend of the season was probably Interlagos, where I think I would have started in second position in the race without the penalty for replacing the power unit. And I could have fought for the win, yes. In Austin I got the pole and we would have been very fast in the race, if only I would have made it beyond the first lap” – the Ferrari driver recalled to Sky Sports UK, not hiding his regret for the retirement on the first lap due to a risky maneuver from the Mercedes of George Russell – “Winning always has a special flavour, of course, but honestly I drove much better in Brazil or Austin than I did in Silverstone.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
