Carlos Sainz opens door to shock Ferrari comeback with single demand. Carlos Sainz has excelled at Williams but hasn’t ruled out returning to Ferrari.

Carlos Sainz Ferrari 2024 F1

Carlos Sainz has rediscovered his rhythm at Williams after a challenging start to the season, yet he has not ruled out the possibility of racing for Ferrari again at some point in his career. The Spanish driver has been impressing consistently, particularly in Sprint qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix, where he recorded the eighth-fastest time. In doing so, he outpaced both his former Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc and current Williams teammate Alexander Albon.

Over the last six race weekends, the Spaniard has amassed 32 points, a remarkable return to form. By comparison, Ferrari’s current driver Lewis Hamilton, who replaced Carlos Sainz last season, has scored just 35 points over the same period, underlining the Spaniard’s strong performance in a new environment.

Sainz maintains ties with Ferrari

Despite leaving Ferrari, Carlos Sainz has been careful to maintain a positive relationship with the Italian team, a strategy that could open doors for a future return. His professionalism has ensured that he remains a well-regarded figure at Maranello, and fans still remember his achievements with the Scuderia, including four Grand Prix victories, the most recent being the Mexico City GP in October 2024.

Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner has hinted that the Ferrari hierarchy may be reconsidering their decision after observing the struggles of Lewis Hamilton, who has recently set the team record for the most appearances without a podium finish. The Spaniard’s strong track record and enduring popularity at the team make him an obvious candidate should a future vacancy arise.

Carlos Sainz open to Ferrari return, but timing is key

When asked in a recent interview with Motorsport.de if he would consider rejoining Ferrari, Carlos Sainz confirmed his openness but stressed the timing must be right. He acknowledged that any potential comeback would only be “in the distant future,” as he remains committed to his long-term contract with Williams. His focus appears to be on seeing the current project through before exploring opportunities elsewhere.

With Mercedes power under the hood, Williams has shown promise under new F1 regulations, and team principal James Vowles is optimistic about their potential to challenge the frontrunners, possibly even outperforming Ferrari at certain circuits. While the team’s competitiveness could make a long-term Ferrari move unnecessary, Carlos Sainz’s proven talent keeps him in the conversation for the Italian outfit.

Future of Williams line-up under scrutiny

Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has suggested that the current Williams pairing may not last beyond the 2026 season. While Carlos Sainz has outperformed his teammate Alexander Albon since the summer break, Montoya believes that one driver could dominate next year while the other struggles, prompting potential team changes.

He indicated that Williams could alter its driver line-up in 2027, which could present an opening for Sainz if he seeks a new challenge. While Ferrari is likely to prioritize promoting their own junior talent, such as Oliver Bearman from Haas, a return for Carlos Sainz remains a possibility if circumstances align.

For now, Carlos Sainz’s focus is on maintaining his strong form at Williams, but the door to Ferrari is not fully closed, leaving fans to speculate on a potential reunion with the team where he last tasted victory.
