The countdown separating Carlos Sainz from leaving Ferrari’s Racing Division began in January and is gradually approaching the finish line.
The Spaniard will thus conclude his experience with the Prancing Horse after four seasons, during which he managed to secure his first victory at Silverstone and repeat the feat two more times, despite going through very challenging moments related more to the performance of the cars than to his own form.
Between the Dutch Grand Prix weekend and that of Monza, where Carlos Sainz will receive the affection of Ferrari fans for the last time, the Spanish driver spoke to DAZN Spain, commenting on his forthcoming farewell to the Maranello team.
“What I take away from these four years at Ferrari are the three victories, my first win in Formula 1 at Silverstone, the great moments in Singapore and Melbourne.”
“And that’s why I think it’s also important for me to enjoy these last races without other concerns on my mind, because in life, you never know what might happen next. Being a Ferrari driver and being one for the last races of this season is something I will fully enjoy and make the most of.” – he admitted.
Carlos Sainz also reflected on his departure from Ferrari. The relationship between the parties has had no cracks. Simply put, the arrival of one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, namely Lewis Hamilton, has changed the situation. However, this doesn’t leave any bitterness in Carlos, who isn’t ruling out a potential return in the future.
“Perhaps the hardest thing to explain is that there was nothing that didn’t work with Ferrari. It’s simply that a seven-time world champion [Hamilton] decided to spend the final part of his racing career with Ferrari, and in that sense, I was somewhat of a sacrifice.”
“I leave Ferrari with good results, with a good relationship with both Fred [Vasseur] and Charles [Leclerc]. I think we made a good team, we achieved victories and podiums together, and I had a good relationship with all the engineers and the fans. Therefore, you can never close the door on a team like Ferrari, considering that I still have five or ten years of my career ahead of me.” – he pointed out.
“F1 has taught me that you never know; there are many examples of drivers who leave and then return (the most recent example at Ferrari was Kimi Raikkonen, ed.). I still have many years of my career ahead of me, and I don’t rule anything out. If you are a Ferrari driver, you will be a Ferrari fan forever,” said the Melbourne winner in a recent interview for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere dello Sport. “I leave behind four years of my life during which I did my best to help the team grow, and I believe I succeeded.”
“Williams is a career goal; in the past, I helped a historic team like McLaren to rise again, and they are succeeding: at Grove, they want to follow the same path to return to the top. They have a serious project with strong investments, even though the goals are long-term. I believe in it; I signed a contract for 2025 and 2026,” he continued. “For some time now, fans have been waiting for me at Maranello to let me know they are sorry about my departure and that they will continue to support me even at Williams. It’s a wonderful thing, and the only possible way to thank them is to give my all at Monza, to try to give them the thrill of a victory or a podium for these four years in which they made me feel at home.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
