Chills on Friday Already
The ultra-fast Jeddah Corniche Circuit, with its blind corners and walls extremely close to the track, delivers thrills and tension even during sessions that should, on paper, be calm and uneventful, like the first free practice session. The particular characteristics of the Saudi layout force drivers and teams to stay constantly alert, or risk incidents that are always lurking on this unique street circuit.
Carlos Sainz had a notably scary moment during the first free practice session. The Williams driver became furious over the radio at his former team – Ferrari – because of the behaviour of Lewis Hamilton, who was ahead of him on track. The Spaniard was in the middle of a flying lap when suddenly – in the ultra-fast sequence of turns 7-8-9-10, made up of rapid right-left direction changes – he encountered a slow-moving car just off the racing line.
Team Radio
Carlos Sainz was startled and immediately lifted off the throttle, aborting his lap. He then expressed his anger over the radio at whoever had slowed down in what he deemed a dangerous spot – specifically, the #44 Ferrari. “F***, the Ferrari. My god, that was too dangerous. He can’t let me through there. Please, someone tell Ferrari not to let drivers pass there. It’s really dangerous!”
From the onboard camera of the Williams, you can see how Carlos Sainz spotted Lewis Hamilton’s car only at the last moment and was visibly shaken, fearing a collision. This episode brings renewed attention to the dangers of the Saudi circuit and the critical need for careful management of slow laps by both drivers and teams to avoid such high-risk moments.
Rádio de Sainz:
“ A Ferrari. Uau, foi tão perigoso. Ele não pode me deixar passar por lá.
“Por favor, alguém diga à Ferrari para não deixar os pilotos passarem lá. É tão perigoso.” pic.twitter.com/89CER45Yjs
