Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz has strongly criticized unprofessional reporters for producing sensationalist articles implying that he might be absent from the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend on the streets of Monte Carlo.
During the customary charity football match at Monaco’s Stade Louis II, the Ferrari was seen with a a bandage on his leg during the match, as the media immediately raised doubts about his participation in Sunday’s race through the streets of the Principality.
Photographs from the match captured the Spanish driver receiving medical attention, further fueling the speculation.
However, Carlos Sainz expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that “There were people saying I was skipping the race. It’s a bit more now, with social media, TikTok. There’s more amateur journalism, people really trying to bring up some news to get some extra views and extra clickbait. Without any information, they’re trying to make a prediction of what’s going to happen on Sunday. But it’s just useless and unnecessary to create a headline that has no base or no information.” – the Ferrari driver admitted.
Carlos Sainz enters the Monaco Grand Prix weekend with a good chance to disrupt Red Bull’s dominant start to the 2023 Formula One championship.
Red Bull, the reigning Formula 1 constructors’ champions, have triumphed in all five races thus far. Max Verstappen has secured three victories, while his teammate Sergio Perez has claimed two, resulting in a 14-point lead for Verstappen in the drivers’ standings ahead of the Monte Carlo race.

Nevertheless, Ferrari has displayed strength in qualifying this season, as well as at Monaco in the past two championships, with local hero Charles Leclerc securing pole position in the last two years, unfortunately without being able to capitalize on Sunday in the Monaco Grand Prix due to various circumstances. Two seasons ago, a crash during qualifying caused unnoticed damage to his Ferrari single-seater, which was discovered only during the reconnaissance lap on Sunday, preventing Charles Leclerc from starting the Monaco Grand Prix.
The following year, strategic errors by the Maranello team in handling the changing weather conditions led to the Monegasque finishing a frustrated fourth place despite leading the race in the early stages.
Fortunately, in both instances, Carlos Sainz showcased Ferrari’s capabilities by securing the second-place trophy.
As the Italian side prepares for this year’s Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, they have demonstrated the ability to challenge Red Bull on certain occasions, although they have struggled with tire overheating issues in the SF-23 during races.
When assessing his prospects for Sunday, Carlos Sainz explained:
“Monaco has always been good for us in the past years. We were very strong in ’21 with a relatively weak car, but we managed to put it on pole, so I do think we have a strong opportunity. At the same time, I also think Red Bull are favourites everywhere we go because they have no weaknesses, and so they are again the team to beat.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
